House Passes Highway Extension & Critical Legislation for our Veterans

Statement

Date: July 29, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) released the following statement on House passage of H.R. 3236, the Surface Transportation and Veterans Health Care Choice Improvement Act:

"The House remains committed to achieving a long-term fix to the Highway Trust Fund. Though this short-term extension isn't the best solution, it will give Congress the time it needs to negotiate a highway bill that is fully funded and long-term.

"This bill also includes two important provisions for our veterans. The first provides funding for a large budget gap in the Department of Veterans Affairs. This funding measure follows House passage of the VA Accountability Act, which will help end the VA's culture of indifference and lack of accountability. The second is the unanimously passed Hire More Heroes Act, which exempts veterans from Obamacare's job-killing employer mandate threshold if they already have health care through TRICARE or the VA. With these bills, we can increase veteran employment and make sure our veterans have access to the care they deserve."
