Edwards Statement On H. Con. Res. 55

Statement

Date: June 17, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Donna F. Edwards (MD-4) today issued the following statement regarding her vote for H.Con.Res 55. The House defeated the legislation by a vote of 139-288-1.

"The most important decision Congressional members can make is whether to send our troops into harm's way," Edwards said. "I supported today's resolution because I believe House Republican leadership should not abdicate Congress's constitutional responsibility to debate and vote on the authorization of war.

"Without Congressional approval, this Administration, and the next, is able to claim outdated authorizations for the use of military force dating to 2001 and 2002. Further the legislation offers a sensible pathway for this vote to come up to Congress by directing the President to withdraw all American military personnel from Iraq by December 31, 2015 unless Congress votes to authorize the use of force. Thirteen years after the last authorization, American families deserve a true debate and vote on this issue.
