Edwards Statement Celebrating Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month

Statement

Date: May 7, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Donna F. Edwards (MD-4) released the below statement today marking Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month.

"This May, let us pay tribute to the generations of Asian and Pacific Islanders who have enhanced America's history," Edwards said. "Commemorating Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month is about reflecting on those who gave birth to our diverse community and celebrating those who continue that tradition.

"The month of May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. Both reflect the long road Asian-Pacific Americans have endured and the hard work that they have displayed along the way.

"More than 18 million Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, representing a diverse community of backgrounds, cultures, and experiences, now make their homes in the United States making valuable contributions to every aspect of American life. These men and women are leaders in all areas -- in business and government, science and medicine, the arts and our Armed Forces, education and sports. Let us come together and celebrate the accomplishments of Maryland's Asian-Pacific American community."
