Hoeven: Department of Justice to Award North Dakota Nearly $70,000

Senator John Hoeven, who serves on the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee, today announced that the U.S. Department of Justice's Bureau of Justice Assistance will award a total of $69,116 to Cass County and the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians through its Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program. JAG allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a wide range of activities to control and prevent crime based on state and local needs. The funds can be used for state and local initiatives, training, technical assistance, equipment, personnel, supplies and information systems.

The funds are awarded as follows:

Cass County -- $57,346 -- For overtime salary of officers assigned to the Fargo Police Department for crime prevention and crash reduction services. Additionally, $10,000 will be used by the Fargo Police Department to purchase mobile radios and body cameras to ensure optimal communications between law enforcement officials.

Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians -- $11,770 -- To purchase portable breath and drug kits to ensure community safety and address drinking and driving and illegal drugs on the Turtle Mountain Reservation.

"As North Dakota's population continues to grow, it's important that we equip our law enforcement officers with the tools they need to keep our communities safe," Hoeven said. "This funding will support law enforcement in Cass County and on the Turtle Mountain Reservation so they can continue to prevent and control crime."
