U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp today announced nearly $340,000 in federal funding to improve fire safety in North Dakota.

"It's crucial that North Dakota first responders have access to resources like training programs and protective equipment that will help keep our communities strong and safe," said Heitkamp. "As the daughter of a volunteer firefighter, I understand the significance of emergency services, especially in rural areas. These federal funds will support our firefighters' efforts to protect and serve our communities while making sure they also remain safe."

The funds from the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program are distributed as follows

North Dakota Firefighter's Association - $319,730

Inkster Rural Fire Protection District - $18,096

Operated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the purpose of the AFG Program is to help local fire departments strengthen their preparedness and ability to respond to fires and related hazards to improve public and firefighter safety. The AFG program provides direct assistance to fire departments and emergency medical service organizations that can be used to purchase response equipment, personal protective equipment and vehicles.

Heitkamp has long been active in addressing emerging safety challenges facing North Dakota. Specifically, last fall, Heitkamp launched her Strong & Safe Communities Initiative to address emerging challenges and bring a renewed focus to safety. Heitkamp recognizes the vital role local fire departments play in maintaining safe communities, and is committed to making sure they receive the resources and training they need to protect North Dakota families and communities.
