Ranking Member Scott Celebrates the 50th Anniversary of Medicare and Medicaid, Urges Medicaid Expansion

Statement

Ranking Member Robert C. "Bobby" Scott (VA-03) issued the following statement on the 50th Anniversary of Medicare and Medicaid:

"On July 30, 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed Medicare and Medicaid into law and made access to affordable, quality health care a fundamental American value. Medicare and Medicaid have helped millions of Americans -- particularly seniors, people with disabilities, and low income families -- live with economic security and dignity. The Affordable Care Act builds upon that progress by helping to close the donut hole for seniors and improving the quality of services available in these vital programs.

"Unfortunately, many states have refused federal funding for Medicaid -- available through the Affordable Care Act -- to assist uninsured low-income families and others in need. The decision not to expand Medicaid is leaving many of our nation's most vulnerable families without access to preventive care, a usual source of clinic care, and other needed medical services. This decision not only affects families and communities, it weakens our local and state economies, ultimately hurting our nation's economy. Regardless of where they live, all Americans have a right to access affordable health care.

"As we celebrate the great progress and success of the Medicare and Medicaid programs over the past 50 years, it is my hope that we can continue to work to strengthen and protect these programs. American families deserve to enjoy the protection and security that these programs provide for many years to come."
