Press Release

Date: July 25, 2015
Location: Concord, NH

Governor Maggie Hassan was today named vice chair of the National Governors Association (NGA) Health and Human Services Committee by NGA Chair Utah Governor Gary Herbert and NGA Vice Chair Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe.

The NGA Health and Human Services Committee handles issues dealing with health care, particularly as they relate to Medicaid, and federal-state safety net programs such as Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and other social services. Members of the committee ensure that the Governors' views are represented in the shaping of federal policy.

"Ensuring that all of our citizens are able to live healthy, productive lives is not only essential to their well-being, it is also critical to our economy because we know that our businesses need a healthy workforce in order to grow and thrive," Governor Hassan said. "The health and well-being of our citizens is a constant priority for all governors. I am honored to be named Vice Chair of the 2015-2016 NGA Health and Human Services Committee and I look forward to working with my fellow Governors, our federal partners, health care providers and all other stakeholders on policies that will help strengthen the health and well-being of our people."

Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker will serve as chair of the committee. Governor Hassan previously served as vice chair of the 2014-2015 NGA Education and Workforce Committee.

Since entering office, Governor Hassan has focused on priorities that are critical for improving the health and well-being of our people and communities. Last year, she signed a bipartisan health care expansion plan -- the New Hampshire Health Protection Program -- under which more than 41,000 hard-working Granite Staters now have quality, affordable health coverage, including coverage for substance abuse and mental health services.
