Gardner Supports Measure To Combat Sexual Assault In The Military

Senator Cory Gardner (R-CO) voted in favor today of an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act offered by Senator Gillibrand (D-NY) to reform procedures for certain offenses related to sexual assault under the Uniform Code of Military Justice. The amendment was supported by a bipartisan group of Senators but failed to reach the 60-vote threshold for passage.

"We must continue to combat sexual assault in our military," Gardner said. "I recognize the effort that military leadership and our men and women in uniform have already undertaken to address these terrible crimes, and I commend their progress. Today's vote offered us a chance to move even further towards the goal of eliminating sexual assault in the military.

"America's armed forces are the greatest in the world, and the men and women who serve are the reason why. As they protect America from threats at home and abroad, we must do our best to protect them from a judicial process that isn't doing enough to keep them safe. That's what today's vote was about, and that's why I was proud to support this amendment. I remain committed to seeing these reforms enacted, and will support them going forward."
