Location: Bismarck, ND

Gov. Jack Dalrymple today honors military members who were prisoners of war (POW) or missing in action (MIA) commemorating the dedication of the POW MIA Memorial at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery in Mandan. The memorial lists the 461 names of North Dakotans who were either POWs or declared MIA from World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and Desert Storm.

"The POW MIA Memorial pays tribute to our state's long, proud history of patriotism and service, along with generations of North Dakotans who have answered this country's call to duty," Dalrymple said. "The dedication of this memorial ensures that those North Dakotans who have served will not be forgotten."

The idea for the memorial was conceived in 2007 by the Second Brigade Motorcycle Club and the Vietnam Vets/Legacy Vets Motorcycle Club. After the clubs received permission for the future memorial's location, they began work on its design and fundraised for the project. The memorial was constructed with private donations made by local businesses and citizens.
