Protecting and promoting the health and safety of a woman and her unborn child is of utmost importance to me. I also believe a woman should have the right to consult with her physician and make the choice that she feels is right in relation to her pregnancy. If we are to address the issue at the heart of the debate, reducing the number of abortions, we must increase comprehensive sex education and increase access to safe, affordable contraceptives.

In a time of economic recovery I believe it is imperative that the Congress be good stewards of taxpayer dollars. I strongly believe in restoring our nation to principles of fiscal discipline and believe this can be accomplished through eliminating waste, fraud and abuse, closing tax loopholes and reducing discretionary spending across the board. I support comprehensive immigration reform that would provide a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants currently in the U.S. so long as they pay a fine, learn English and go to the back of the line for the opportunity to become citizens.
I also believe that immigration reform must also stiffen penalties against employers who intentionally hire and exploit illegal immigrants, protect US workers from unfair competition, include strong labor protections for temporary workers, and improve the family based visa system to ensure that families don't wait years to be reunited.

During the 112th Congress I will continue my work on behalf of the working families of Illinois' 17th Congressional District. Nothing is more important to me than restoring the American Dream for all those families, who through no fault of their own were made victims by the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.
