Pro-choiceCandidate AnswerDo you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
Other or expanded principles

Roe v. Wade is the right balance between these two conscientious positions, both of which I respect. My pro-choice position does not mean I favor abortions, but I recognize the right of a woman to control her own body.

YesCandidate AnswerDo you support same-sex marriage?
Other or expanded principles

I don't advocate for same-sex marriage, but I do advocate for civil unions of same-sex partners and recognition of them on an equivalent basis and with equal rights as marriages of heterosexuals. In that sense, I support same-sex marriage. The definition of "marriage" at this point in history should be left to the states and churches, with the federal governemnt recognizing civil unions, including marriage. The recognition that legally recognized couples form the strength of our nation regardless of their make-up needs to be allowed to evolve. Texas and the District in which I am running are still evolving.

NoCandidate AnswerDo you support targeting suspected terrorists outside of official theaters of conflict?
NoShould the U.S use military force in order to prevent Iran from possessing a nuclear weapon?
Other or expanded principles

Our country must partner with the world community in fighting terrorism and discouraging nuclear proliferation, and we are doing so. We can target terrorists with permission and participation of the governments whose territory are involved, and we are generally doing so. In discouraging nuclear proliferation, we can and are working with other nations to maximize economic and isolating sanctions as an alternative to military force. Decision-making needs to be more public, transparent, and objective. No action should be taken which puts us in a war without Congressional authorization.

NoCandidate AnswerDo you support allowing individuals to divert a portion of their Social Security taxes into personal retirement accounts?

Indicate what federal spending levels (#1-6) you support for the following general categories. Select one number per category; you can use a number more than once.
Slightly Decreasea) Agriculture
Slightly Decreaseb) Arts
Slightly Decreasec) Defense
Slightly Decreased) Education
Slightly Decreasee) Environment
Slightly Decreasef) Homeland Security
Slightly Decreaseg) International aid
Slightly Decreaseh) Medical Research
Slightly Decreasei) Scientific Research
Slightly Decreasej) Space exploration
Slightly Decreasek) United Nations
Slightly Decreasel) Welfare
Slightly Decreasem) Other or expanded categories

Our spending must be brought in line with our revenue, soon, or at a minimum in line with our growth in Gross National Product, and in doing so difficult decisions need to be made to increase revenue and decrease spending. I do not want to decrease everything, despite my answers above, but the decision on which areas to decrease depends upon where efficiencies and restructuring can provide the same or slightly reduced benefits at lower net cost outlays.

Indicate what federal tax levels (#1-6) you support for the following general categories. Select one number per category; you can use a number more than once.
Slightly Increasea) Capital gains taxes
Slightly Increaseb) Corporate taxes
Slightly Increasec) Excise taxes (alcohol)
Slightly Increased) Excise taxes (cigarettes)
Slightly Increasee) Excise taxes (transportation fuel)
Slightly Increasef) Income taxes (low-income families)
Slightly Increaseg) Income taxes (middle-income families)
Greatly Increaseh) Income taxes (high-income families)
Greatly Increasei) Inheritance taxes
Slightly Increasej) Payroll taxes
Slightly Increasek) Other or expanded categories

The Bush tax cuts should be allowed to expire, thereby, among other effects, restoring the inheritance taxes and helping put us back on track toward achieving a balanced budget. Tax breaks for large corporations and the wealthy need to be narrowed down or eliminated. The tax code needs to be simplified, but with a view that everyone pays something and everyone pays their fair share. Any increases in revenue should be matched by greater reductions in spending, not by one or the other!

Please explain in a total of 100 words or less, your top two or three priorities if elected. If they require additional funding for implementation, please explain how you would obtain this funding.

We need to work toward balancing the budget by selective decreases in spending, improved efficiencies in operations, eliminating many tax preferences, and increasing tax rates in some categories. While doing that, we need to maintain the strength of our people- in healthcare, education, environment, job availability and job support. In other words, capitalism must be allowed to work as effectively as possible, with government assistance, while not eroding our safety net and the values which our nation espouses and to which others look for guidance and leadership.
