Vote Smart's Research

  • "As a result of the January 2010 Supreme Court ruling in Citizens United v Federal Election Commission, corporations, unions, and incorporated special interest groups may participate directly in the election process without contribution limits. Further, persons who pool their funds or contribute to Political Action Committees (PACs) may spend those funds in the 60 day period preceding an election. I am concerned that there are now no limitations on incorporated entities while individuals are still subjected to strict regulations. We must look for ways to address this discrepancy." https://votesmart.org/candidate/political-courage-test/26717/donald-young/#.WzvPF63SQfI (votesmart.org)

YesCandidate AnswerDo you support building the Keystone XL pipeline?
YesCandidate AnswerDo you support government funding for the development of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, thermal)?
NoDo you support increased regulations on the hydraulic fracturing ("fracking") industry?
Other or expanded principles

Alaskans and Americans deserve an all of the above approach that supports traditional and alternative energy sources, not a systematic veto on specific industries and economic opportunity as we've seen in recent years.
Hydraulic fracturing is an energy extraction technique that is regulated, safe and proven. A draft report released by the Environmental Protection Agency confirms this. While I fully support renewable and alternative energy projects, many technologies remain unproven and cost prohibitive on a large scale. The cleanest of those bridge or back-up fuel sources is certainly natural gas.

NoCandidate AnswerDo you support same-sex marriage?
Other or expanded principles

Throughout my time in Congress, I have always fought to preserve states rights. Alaskans chose in 1998 to define marriage, and based upon my strong belief in the 10th Amendment I have always defended their decision. My personal view on this matter, guided by my religious beliefs, is that marriage should be defined as a union between one man and one woman. I ultimately believe the courts should have left this decision to the states. Despite my views and those of many Alaskans, the courts have ruled.

Please explain in a total of 100 words or less, your top two or three priorities if elected. If they require additional funding for implementation, please explain how you would obtain this funding.

My top three legislative priorities are ensuring access to our federal lands and resources, building Alaska's infrastructure, and ensuring a strong national defense and resources to care for our veterans. Today, the biggest fight is the ongoing fight against the Obama Administration's waterfall of regulations pouring out of federal agencies. I will continue to fight in Congress for legislation that promotes a vibrant economy and strong military for all Americans.
