  • "If the U.S. is to deepen its engagement, it should be with an equally strong coalition of partners and a well defined mission. If a military action deserves our support there should be a clear understanding of what winning means and a commitment to achieving it. We have had to learn that lesson too many times, in Korea, Vietnam, Iraq I, Iraq II, Somalia and so many other places." (
  • "Mike is convinced, moreover, that despite the real threat terrorism poses, the United States must take care not to enter into military action nor commit ground troops to war against ISIS or any terrorist groups without a clear mission and support from others in the region to build a coalition to combat ISIS. The United States cannot and should not go it alone." (
YesShould the U.S use military force in order to prevent governments hostile to the United States from possessing a nuclear weapon?
Other or expanded principles

Drone strikes outside theaters of conflict may be permissible if capture is impossible and threat imminent. Assassinations are not, however, substitute for coherent strategy to defeat terrorists. Please explain in a total of 100 words or less, your top two or three priorities if elected. If they require additional funding for implementation, please explain how you would obtain this funding.

1) Jobs: There has been some good news about job growth, but too many are underemployed or fearful of losing jobs. On Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, I can easily identify projects, delayed maintenance and investments in green industry and mass transit, to employ hundreds of thousands, with multiplier effects to employ many more.
2) Economic Inequality: economic stagnation and growing inequalities threaten our common future. We need #1 above but we must also fight racism and sexism, and respect all our fellow citizens. "USA" means UNITED.
3) Immigration reform: preserve family unity, give refuge to oppressed, attract and retain talent
