Tom Glass' Issue Positions (Political Courage Test)

Tom Glass has provided voters with clear stances on key issues by responding to the 2018 Political Courage Test.

What is the Political Courage Test?

Texas State Legislative Election 2018 Political Courage Test

Pro-lifea) Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
Nob) Should abortion be legal when the pregnancy resulted from incest or rape?
Yesc) Do you support the prohibition of public funds for organizations that perform abortions?
d) Other or expanded principles:
1) Budget Stabilization:
Noa) Do you support the creation of a state income tax in Texas?
Indicate which proposals you support (if any) for balancing Texas's budget.
Yesb) Reducing state employee salaries AND/OR pensions?
Noc) Instituting mandatory furloughs AND/OR layoffs for state employees?
Yesd) Reducing benefits for Medicaid recipients?
e) Other or expanded principles:

The number one way to reduce significant amounts of spending in Texas is to stop taxpayers services to non-citizens. This will help the county hospital budgets, the welfare spending (including Medicaid), and will greatly reduce spending on education. I believe that charity hospitals can and should pick up the slack. And I believe that private schools and homeschooling can educate children who are not citizens. We do need to look at pensions of state employees to make sure we are not bankrupting ourselves. We need to replace Medicaid with a made for Texas system that subsidizes fewer people.

Noa) Do you support any limits on campaign contributions to state candidates?
Nob) Do you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?
Yesc) Do you support the use of an independent AND/OR bipartisan commission for redistricting?
Yesd) Do you support requiring a government-issued photo identification in order to vote at the polls?
e) Other or expanded principles:

As a former computing security specialist, I care deeply about election integrity. Because of my experience, I know that current electronic voting systems have serious flaws.

I favor requiring that current electronic voting systems be replaced with hybrid systems that count electronically, but display a paper ballot to the voter for confirmation before voting, and use that paper for recounts when requested.

Yesa) Do you support capital punishment for certain crimes?
Yesb) Do you support the legalization of marijuana for recreational purposes?
Yesc) Should a minor accused of a violent crime be prosecuted as an adult?
Yesd) Do you support the enforcement of federal immigration laws by state and local police?
e) Other or expanded principles:

Much of the tension between the public and law enforcement is caused by the intrusions into the community caused by marijuana prohibition. We need to improve relations with law enforcement and allow them to focus on real crimes against person and property.

Noa) Do you support state government spending as a means of promoting economic growth?
Yesb) Do you support lowering state taxes as a means of promoting economic growth?
Yesc) Do you support reducing state government regulations on the private sector?
Nod) Do you support expanding access to unemployment benefits?
Yese) Do you support requiring welfare applicants to pass a drug test in order to receive benefits?
Nof) Do you support an increase of the minimum wage of Texas?
g) Other or expanded principles:

I will work to eliminate property taxes. I do not think increasing property taxes slower is sufficient.

While we are working to end the property taxes, we should replace the wasteful, arbitrary, and maddening appraisal process by fixing assessed value to the purchase price.

And while we are at it, we should push for a real homestead exemption that prevents Texans from losing their home during their lives due to non=payment of property tax.

Noa) Do you support adopting federal education standards in Texas?
Yesb) Do you support state funding for charter schools?
Noc) Should immigrants unlawfully present in the United States who graduate from Texas high schools be eligible for in-state tuition at public universities?
Nod) Do you support increasing funding for the state education budget?
e) Other or expanded principles:

We need to fundamentally overhaul education as we replace the property tax. We should stop the unconstitutional federal meddling into schools and the mandates from Austin which drives a top-heavy administrative compliance burden.

We need greatly reduce expensive standardized testing to let teachers teach, and local communities and parents should control education.

Noa) Do you support state funding for the development of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, thermal)?
Nob) Do you support state government regulations of greenhouse gas emissions?
Noc) Do you support increasing state funding for clean drinking water initiatives?
d) Other or expanded principles:

The state (not the feds) should regulate companies and individuals to stop pollution. Since the computer models of the climate change advocates have yet to accurately predict the future, I do not believe in hampering economic growth of Texas to implement any government imposed "solutions" to the "problem."

When government does not pick winners and losers, our economy produces the most abundance.

One of the biggest dangers to our economy is the capture of legislative and regulatory processes by special interests (i.e., cronies). Businesses need a level playing field with no special privileges at the expense of Texans.

Noa) Do you generally support gun-control legislation?
Nob) Should background checks be required on gun sales between private citizens at gun shows?
Yesc) Should teachers be allowed to bring guns into the classroom?
Nod) Should a license be required for gun ownership?
e) Other or expanded principles:

Individuals have a natural right to life and therefore the defense of that life from aggressors that should be protected by the Texas and U.S. bills of rights. Increasing liberty increases security. I will lead on the push to constitutional carry and in allowing responsible adults to be armed on school facilities.

Noa) Should the state government increase funding for treatment facilities to combat opioid abuse?
Nob) Do you support Medicaid expansion through Texas's health care programs?
Noc) Do you support requiring individuals to purchase health care insurance?
Yesd) Do you support legislation that grants citizens the right to choose to die through euthanasia?
Noe) Do you support eliminating religious exemptions for vaccinations?
Nof) Do you support increasing funding for state medical facilities and hospitals in rural areas?
g) Other or expanded principles:

The more freedom we give health providers and individuals in the health arena, the better our health care will be.

The biggest problem we face is giving federal tax deduction for company buying health insurance for employees, but not to individuals buying it for themselves. Fixing that would make health insurance companies compete for the business of individuals, instead of corporations and quality of care would go up with lower prices.

A lot of the pressure creating opioid abuse can be relieved by allowing medical marijuana as a substitute.

Noa) Do you support the inclusion of sexual orientation in Texas's anti-discrimination laws?
Nob) Do you support the inclusion of gender identity in Texas's anti-discrimination laws?
Noc) Do you support greater efforts by Texas state government in closing the pay gap between men and women?
Nod) Should individuals be required to use a bathroom that corresponds with the gender listed on their birth certificate?
Noe) Do you support the removal of Confederate statues from public spaces?
f) Other or expanded principles:

Government does not need to be involved in how people choose to live their lives.

Totalitarian regimes seek to destroy history. Americans should remember and learn from our history. If you don't like honoring some historical figure, work to honor others in history you admire. Don't destroy our heritage.

In the following area, please explain in a total of 100 words or less, your top two or three priorities if elected. If they require additional funding for implementation, please explain how you would obtain this funding.

My top three priorities are working to 1) eliminate property tax, 2) enforce the Constitution, and 3) lead on constitutional carry.

Not a single state senator filed bills for three of the top five Republican legislative priorities in 2017.

If you want your District 7 state senator to pursue the 2018 Republican legislative priorities of property tax replacement, constitutional carry, and elimination of tax-funded lobbying, you are going to have to vote for Libertarian, Tom Glass.

The Democrat has no chance of winning this gerrymandered district. You could literally split the 72% GOP vote and the Democrat still loses.

Vote Smart does not permit the use of its name or programs in any campaign activity, including advertising, debates, and speeches.
