What is the Political Courage Test?

New Jersey Congressional Election 2018 Political Courage Test

Pro-choiceCandidate AnswerDo you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
Other or expanded principles

I do not support government intervention in women's private medical decisions. These are decisions that should be decided exclusively between a woman and her doctor.

YesCandidate AnswerIn order to balance the budget, do you support an income tax increase on any tax bracket?
YesCandidate AnswerIn order to balance the budget, do you support reducing defense spending?
Other or expanded principles
YesCandidate AnswerDo you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?
Other or expanded principles

Our elected officials should be working for the people who vote for them, not by the organizations that pour money into their campaigns. The best way to accomplish this is to take the money out of the equation and force elected officials to campaign by actually reaching out to voters directly and listening to and supporting their needs and concerns.

YesCandidate AnswerDo you support federal spending as a means of promoting economic growth?
NoCandidate AnswerDo you support lowering corporate taxes as a means of promoting economic growth?
Other or expanded principles

I support a federally-funded public works program as well as federal funds to support trade education and job skills training for workers. We should not be pumping public money into corporations but rather helping our citizens become better contributors to the economy.

YesCandidate AnswerDo you support requiring states to adopt federal education standards?
Other or expanded principles

To be clear, federal education standards should not mandate standardized testing or common core curriculum but should instead mandate improvements in education to increase the quality of individualized education for all students nationwide.

YesCandidate AnswerDo you support government funding for the development of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, thermal)?
YesCandidate AnswerDo you support the federal regulation of greenhouse gas emissions?
Other or expanded principles

I would like to have a habitable earth for the rest of my life, my kids' lives, and my grandkids' lives at the very least. We need to be taking action to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and to slow down the trend of global climate change. Furthermore, the EPA programs to protect our water supply and clean air that have been cut need to be restored.

YesCandidate AnswerDo you generally support gun-control legislation?
Other or expanded principles

I support some gun-control legislation but realize that this is a nuanced issue. We need to protect Americans' civil liberties, including the Second Amendment, but we also need to better ensure the safety of all Americans by making sure guns don't make it into the hands of people who will not handle them safely and responsibly.

YesCandidate AnswerDo you support repealing the 2010 Affordable Care Act ("Obamacare")?
Other or expanded principles

I support repeal and replace in the instance that the ACA is replaced with a more comprehensive set of plans to guarantee universal coverage, either through offering public options or single payer care that is government-funded and non-profit operated.

NoCandidate AnswerDo you support the construction of a wall along the Mexican border?
NoCandidate AnswerDo you support requiring immigrants who are unlawfully present to return to their country of origin before they are eligible for citizenship?
Other or expanded principles

If either of these are required to negotiate a deal on better immigration policies, I will support that deal in full. Ultimately, what we need is compromise on this issue and for both parties to come to the table. Further, immigration would be perceived as less of an issue if Americans were more economically secure, which really ought to be our first priority.

YesCandidate AnswerDo you support the legalization of marijuana for recreational purposes?
Other or expanded principles
NoCandidate AnswerShould the United States use military force in order to prevent governments hostile to the U.S. from possessing a nuclear weapon?
NoCandidate AnswerDo you support increased American intervention in Middle Eastern conflicts beyond air support?
Other or expanded principles
Please explain in a total of 100 words or less, your top two or three priorities if elected. If they require additional funding for implementation, please explain how you would obtain this funding.

My top priorities if elected are to restore economic security to Americans, restore our education system to once again being the best in the world for creating strong contributors to the economy, and rebuilding our crumbling infrastructure and helping alleviate student loan debt via a public works program. As for funding, we need to close effective tax loopholes in the corporate tax code and ensure that corporations are paying their fair share, while incentivizing investment in their American employees.
