What is the Political Courage Test?

Alabama Congressional Election 2018 Political Courage Test

Pro-choiceCandidate AnswerDo you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
Other or expanded principles

Every life is sacred, and we should support policies that would reduce the incidence of abortion. However, more lives will be saved by investing in comprehensive sex education, contraception, and prenatal care than would be saved by making abortion illegal.

YesCandidate AnswerIn order to balance the budget, do you support an income tax increase on any tax bracket?
YesCandidate AnswerIn order to balance the budget, do you support reducing defense spending?
Other or expanded principles

We should not cut salaries or benefits for our military service members, but we need to be more strategic in our purchasing and use of equipment.

YesCandidate AnswerDo you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?
Other or expanded principles
YesCandidate AnswerDo you support federal spending as a means of promoting economic growth?
YesCandidate AnswerDo you support lowering corporate taxes as a means of promoting economic growth?
Other or expanded principles

I think it was a good thing to lower corporate taxes but I don't think they need to be lowered any further.

YesCandidate AnswerDo you support requiring states to adopt federal education standards?
Other or expanded principles

Obviously, this would depend on what the standards are. But I don't think it's a bad idea to ensure that all schools across our country are held to a base level of standards.

YesCandidate AnswerDo you support government funding for the development of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, thermal)?
YesCandidate AnswerDo you support the federal regulation of greenhouse gas emissions?
Other or expanded principles

Other or expanded principles

That's too vague to answer. I support closing the private sale loophole on gun sale background checks. And I support gun violence prevention restraining orders.

NoCandidate AnswerDo you support repealing the 2010 Affordable Care Act ("Obamacare")?
Other or expanded principles

I still think we could fix the ACA, though I am open to considering alternative approaches to healthcare as well.

NoCandidate AnswerDo you support the construction of a wall along the Mexican border?
NoCandidate AnswerDo you support requiring immigrants who are unlawfully present to return to their country of origin before they are eligible for citizenship?
Other or expanded principles

Comprehensive immigration reform is needed. The current system is broken, and there
is plenty of blame to go around. But rather than point fingers for what has happened
thus far, we need to focus on moving forward. Immigration policy should be based on the best available research on what works for economic development and research on the prevalence of criminal activity by
immigrants. As it turns out, immigration is generally good for the economy, and immigrants are not more likely to commit crimes than non-immigrants.

NoCandidate AnswerDo you support the legalization of marijuana for recreational purposes?
Other or expanded principles

I think we should loosen the federal regulations so that states can make their own decisions about marijuana legalization without fear of a federal crackdown. We need to see how it goes in a few states before deciding if its right for the country as a whole.

NoCandidate AnswerShould the United States use military force in order to prevent governments hostile to the U.S. from possessing a nuclear weapon?
Unknown PositionInferred Answer Do you support increased American intervention in Middle Eastern conflicts beyond air support? View Citations
  • Despite exhaustive research, Vote Smart was unable to find information about this candidate's position.
Other or expanded principles

It depends on the conflict.

Please explain in a total of 100 words or less, your top two or three priorities if elected. If they require additional funding for implementation, please explain how you would obtain this funding.

1. I support fully funding the VA healthcare system, including mental health care. I believe the VA should be fully funded before the military budget can be increased.
2. I support increased funding for high-quality early learning programs (age 0 to 5) via the Child Care Development Fund. This will pay for itself over time, but the upfront investment should be paid for with higher taxes for wealthy individuals.
3. I support keeping our promises to fully fund Social Security and Medicare.
