Tom Sawyer has provided voters with clear stances on key issues by responding to the 2016 Political Courage Test.

What is the Political Courage Test?

Nevada Congressional Election 2016 Political Courage Test

Pro-lifeCandidate AnswerDo you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
Other or expanded principles

Life begins at conception, thus a new American, with all the rights provided to all Americans.

NoCandidate AnswerIn order to balance the budget, do you support reducing defense spending?
NoCandidate AnswerIn order to balance the budget, do you support an income tax increase on any tax bracket?
Other or expanded principles

When in the Army I noticed a lot of waste. Defense spending should be treated by our government as if it were their own money. There should never be cost over-runs. If a contractor can not complete their obligation within the bid they made they must eat the cost. That alone will stop unfair bidding and allow smaller companies to be able to have their bids accepted.

It's not an increase in tax we need it is a lowering of waste we need.

NoCandidate AnswerDo you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?
Other or expanded principles
YesDo you support capital punishment for certain crimes?
YesDo you support alternatives to incarceration for certain non-violent offenders such as mandatory counseling or substance abuse treatment?
YesCandidate AnswerDo you support mandatory minimum sentences for non-violent drug offenders?
Other or expanded principles

Mandatory minimums sound harsh but as I understand it, criminals agree to the lower drug offense in order to avoid longer penalties for the more serious crimes they commit. If the judge could weigh the sentence on the whole of the crime then yes.

NoCandidate AnswerDo you support federal spending as a means of promoting economic growth?
YesCandidate AnswerDo you support lowering taxes as a means of promoting economic growth?
Do you support providing tax incentives to businesses for the purpose of job creation?
Other or expanded principles

Taxes that do not promote business or the creation of jobs should be lowered. All taxes should be fair to everyone not a higher percentage of taxes just because you make more. Though Hollywood actors seem to be in favor of taxing them at 90% because they know that will never happen but is a good way to back up their candidate. I think we should remove the social security tax limit then everyone would pay their fair share and would remove the threat of social security running out of money.

NoInferred Answer Do you generally support requiring states to adopt federal education standards? View Citations
  • "States should want to promote the best education they can provide as a way to encourage educators to do the best they can while at the same time encourage businesses to want to be in that state. Federal grants have increased the cost of education while lowering the incentive to bring up standards." http://votesmart.org/candidate/political-courage-test/169323/thomas-sawyer/ (votesmart.org)
  • "Tax payers fund education grades K-12. We need to work locally to educate our children. Education should not be a one size fits all." http://tomsawyerforsenate.org/christian-views/ (tomsawyerforsenate.org)
Other or expanded principles

I think the Federal government should get out of education. It is currently used as a tool to force schools to do what the government wants to give out the money. Leave education to the states. I agree that the 10 most feared words are " I'm from the Federal Government and I'm here to help".

YesCandidate AnswerDo you support building the Keystone XL pipeline?
NoCandidate AnswerDo you support government funding for the development of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, thermal)?
NoDo you support increased regulations on the hydraulic fracturing ("fracking") industry?
Other or expanded principles

Funding of Solar by the government always comes with negatives. Here in Nevada, solar panels were limited to a percentage of the prior years usage. Why? It should be what ever your roof, yard, wherever you place them can hold, you should be able to produce it. The government (Federal, state or local, not all three) should be involved to make sure the net metering is fair to all involved.

NoDo you believe that human activity is contributing to climate change?
NoCandidate AnswerDo you support the federal regulation of greenhouse gas emissions?
Other or expanded principles

This world has experienced changes in climate throughout it's history. Scientist claim we are coming out of an ice age, if so the climate would be getting warmer. I do agree that we should regulate pollution, though over-regulation should never happen. Coal fired power plants have placed screening filters on their stacks and have decreased pollution. Cars have done the same, but it never seems to be enough for those that want more. I notice many of the climate change people fly around to make their point, how about they start walking.

YesCandidate AnswerDo you support repealing the 2010 Affordable Care Act ("Obamacare")?

YesInferred Answer Do you support requiring immigrants who are unlawfully present to return to their country of origin before they are eligible for citizenship? View Citations
  • "[...] entering this country without permission is illegal. We have an immigration law that is not followed by our government which then makes it look broken. When our government and its citizens follow the law it may fix the problems. Until then making new laws and then not following them won’t fix anything" http://tomsawyerforsenate.org/why-im-running/ (tomsawyerforsenate.org)

NoCandidate AnswerDo you support same-sex marriage?
Other or expanded principles
YesInferred Answer Do you support increased American intervention in Iraq and Syria beyond air support? View Citations

The United Sates government must now continually analyze the threat and move where it is best to protect our interests." http://votesmart.org/candidate/political-courage-test/169323/thomas-sawyer/ (votesmart.org)
