Pro-choiceInferred Answer Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation? View Citations
  • "I am both pro-life and pro-choice. The most effective way to reduce the number of abortions is to provide contraception, science-based information, and the full range of reproductive services." http://votesmart.org/candidate/political-courage-test/143416/geoff-young/#.VsH9LZSW8fI (votesmart.org)
  • "I oppose the GOP's abortion platform which would make all abortions illegal." http://votesmart.org/candidate/political-courage-test/143416/geoff-young/#.Vs4lTLIrIfK (votesmart.org)
Other or expanded principles

Making all abortions illegal would increase, not decrease, the number of abortions that would occur. The evidence is in from every region in the world. See http://www.motherjones.com/mojo/2012/01/chart-day-abortion-rates-around-world Therefore, Planned Parenthood and Democrats are the true pro-life Americans. I've never met a Republican politician who is genuinely pro-life and objectively anti-abortion, but all of them hypocritically claim to be. I'm pro-life and therefore a strong supporter of Planned Parenthood. I wish PP's PAC hadn't endorsed the warlike and evil Hillary Clinton (D), however.

YesIn order to balance the budget, do you support reducing defense spending?
YesCandidate AnswerIn order to balance the budget, do you support an income tax increase on any tax bracket?
Other or expanded principles

Federal spending on the military and our numerous "intelligence" agencies needs to be cut by 50%. It would make Americans more, not less, secure because we'd engage in fewer unnecessary, unjust wars. We should improve our treatment of veterans and cut wasteful spending on weapons systems that we don't need to defend America. I've been an expert in foreign and military policies for the last 37 years, and I know how to cut the "defense" budget while making America more secure.

YesDo you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?
Other or expanded principles

My own very senior senator, Mitch McConnell (R), has been a driving force behind the corruption of our political system for all of the decades he's been in the Senate. His main goal in Washington has always been to eliminate all limits on corporate campaign contributions. The damage to our democratic republic has been severe and is still going on.

NoDo you support capital punishment for certain crimes?
YesDo you support alternatives to incarceration for certain non-violent offenders such as mandatory counseling or substance abuse treatment?
NoCandidate AnswerDo you support mandatory minimum sentences for non-violent drug offenders?
Other or expanded principles

There are far, far too many Americans in jails and prisons. That plus the racist nature of our criminal justice system is a major scandal that needs to be addressed urgently. The "war on drugs" has failed and has harmed communities of color worse than other groups.

YesCandidate AnswerDo you support federal spending as a means of promoting economic growth?
YesCandidate AnswerDo you support lowering taxes as a means of promoting economic growth?
YesDo you support providing tax incentives to businesses for the purpose of job creation?
Other or expanded principles

I support raising taxes on the most powerful and richest 1% of the population and lowering taxes on the middle class and poor. If elected, I plan to support Bernie Sanders' proposals re taxes and sustainable economic development.

NoInferred Answer Do you support requiring states to implement education reforms in order to be eligible for competitive federal grants? View Citations
  • Do you support the national Common Core State Standards initiative? "No" http://votesmart.org/candidate/political-courage-test/143416/geoff-young/#.VsIDSZSW8fJ (votesmart.org)
Other or expanded principles

Depends on the proposed reforms. "No Child Left Behind" was a failure because it required too much standardized testing, but Kentucky's (previous) education reform law, the Kentucky Education Reform Act, was good. One of the most important skills all Americans (of all ages) need to develop is the ability to tell when powerful politicians, corporations, government agencies, and institutions are lying to us.

NoCandidate AnswerDo you support building the Keystone XL pipeline?
YesCandidate AnswerDo you support funding for the development of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, thermal)?
YesDo you support increased regulations on the hydraulic fracturing ("fracking") industry?
Other or expanded principles

The entire GOP is hypocritical for opposing environmental regulations on fracking. My opponent, Andy Barr (R), refuses to regulate fracking even though he is thereby unintentionally wiping out coal mining jobs in Kentucky. Energy efficiency - eliminating waste - is the cheapest, most job-producing, fastest, safest, and most reliable solution to our energy problems. Any Kentucky politician who takes money from the fracking industry is a traitor to our coal miners. http://www.motherjones.com/blue-marble/2013/11/chart-these-members-of-congress-are-bankrolled-by-the-fracking-industry

YesDo you believe that human activity is contributing to climate change?
YesCandidate AnswerDo you support the federal regulation of greenhouse gas emissions?
Other or expanded principles

Good jobs and a safe environment are 100% compatible. Energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies such as solar and wind are the way to go.

YesInferred Answer Do you generally support gun-control legislation? View Citations
  • Should background checks be required on gun sales between private citizens at gun shows? "Yes" http://votesmart.org/candidate/political-courage-test/143416/geoff-young/#.Vs4lTLIrIfK (votesmart.org)
Other or expanded principles

I support both the Second Amendment and the reinstatement of the Federal Assault Weapons ban. It was in effect from 1994 to 2004, and the world didn't end.

NoCandidate AnswerDo you support repealing the 2010 Affordable Care Act ("Obamacare")?
Other or expanded principles

We need a single-payer health insurance system like those of most of the world's civilized countries. I support Senator Bernie Sanders' proposal that would build on and improve the ACA, bring back the public option, and implement single-payer health insurance nationwide.

NoCandidate AnswerDo you support requiring illegal immigrants to return to their country of origin before they are eligible for citizenship?
Other or expanded principles

I support fixing our broken immigration system and creating a path to citizenship for more immigrants. America is a nation of immigrants, and (in general) they improve our economy and society.

YesCandidate AnswerDo you support same-sex marriage?
Other or expanded principles

Legalizing it was a step forward for the civil rights of all Americans.

NoCandidate AnswerDo you support targeting suspected terrorists outside of official theaters of conflict?
NoShould the U.S use military force in order to prevent governments hostile to the United States from possessing a nuclear weapon?
Other or expanded principles

Both ideas violate international law, damage the reputation of the United States among the peoples of the world, and fail to work. We create more enemies every year. All of our foreign and military policies need to be completely overhauled. That is my main reason for running for the U.S. House of Representatives. My motto is, "Strength Through Peace." young4ky.com

NoCandidate AnswerDo you support allowing individuals to divert a portion of their Social Security taxes into personal retirement accounts?
Other or expanded principles

I support applying the SS tax to all of a person's income, not just the first $118,500 of it. The existing system is regressive, but the solution is very simple.

The wasteful, bloated military-industrial complex is threatening our financial system and future economic growth. It must be cut by 50% in order to improve our national security, stabilize our economy, generate more jobs, and create fewer enemies. Every other issue pales in comparison to this one.

I support Senator Bernie Sanders' tax proposals. I hope we will all be saying, "President Sanders" after November 8, 2016.

Please explain in a total of 100 words or less, your top two or three priorities if elected. If they require additional funding for implementation, please explain how you would obtain this funding.

1. Wind down the US overseas military empire and close as many foreign bases as possible.
2. Cut military and "intelligence" spending by 50%.
3. Overhaul all of our foreign and military policies asap.
4. Rebuild our infrastructure and invest in education, health care, energy efficiency, and renewable energy technologies. The funding will come from cutting waste - see #2.
