Geoff Young's Issue Positions (Political Courage Test)

Geoff Young has provided voters with clear stances on key issues by responding to the 2019 Political Courage Test.

What is the Political Courage Test?

Kentucky Gubernatorial Election 2019 Political Courage Test

Pro-choicea) Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
Yesb) Should abortion be legal when the pregnancy resulted from incest or rape?
Noc) Do you support the prohibition of public funds for organizations that perform abortions?
d) Other or expanded principles:

I support the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision. All Republican politicians want to put Planned Parenthood out of business. That would immediately cause the abortion rate to go up, not down. See my campaign website on the abortion issue: https://www.young4ky.com/abortion
The "Right-To-Life" political movement has been lying to the American people for 46 years. Their Big Lie is that making all abortions illegal after conception would reduce the abortion rate. However, countries that tried that saw the abortion rate go up, not down. Republicans call us Democrats "baby-killers," but Planned Parenthood supporters are the true pro-life Americans.

Yesa) Do you support the legalization and taxation of online gambling for the purpose of stabilizing Kentucky's pension system?
Budget Stabilization:
Indicate which proposals you support (if any) for balancing Kentucky's budget.
Nob) Reducing state employee salaries AND/OR pensions?
Noc) Instituting mandatory furloughs AND/OR layoffs for state employees?
Yesd) An income tax increase on any tax bracket?
e) Other or expanded principles:

Tax the rich. Kentucky is one of the worst states for taxing the poor, the working class, and the middle class. When Minnesota raised the average state tax rate on its super-rich citizens from 6% to 9%, they solved a lot of their budget problems, and no millionaires went hungry. It's immoral to tax the poor while letting the 1% get a relatively free ride. The Young/French administration will work with the General Assembly to add more tax brackets at the highest income levels and reduce taxes on the middle class. Tax the rich and eliminate the sales tax.

Yesa) Do you support a limit on campaign contributions to state candidates?
Yesb) Do you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?
Yesc) Do you support the use of an independent AND/OR bipartisan commission for redistricting?
Nod) Do you support requiring a government-issued photo identification in order to vote at the polls?
Yese) Do you support automatic voter registration?
f) Other or expanded principles:

I support automatic restoration of voting rights to former felons. I also support public financing of elections because the two dominant parties and the mainstream media corporations can't be trusted to run fair primaries. Although I'm not a lawyer, I have been fighting the Kentucky Democratic Party in court for four years to stop them from rigging Democratic primaries against me and threatening me with arrest and jail if I walk into the Party headquarters buildings in Lexington or Frankfort. Of the four Democrats running for Governor in 2019, Andy Beshear and Adam Edelen are primary-election-rigging crooks. https://www.dropbox.com/s/182ohi1974aquf2/Complaint%20v1%20Apr1019.doc?dl=0

Noa) Do you support capital punishment for certain crimes?
Nob) Should a minor accused of a violent crime be prosecuted as an adult?
Noc) Do you support the enforcement of federal immigration laws by state and local police?
Yesd) Do you support the legalization of medical marijuana?
e) Other or expanded principles:

The Young/French campaign supports the legalization of all forms of cannabis. It would help solve the opioid addiction crisis, and the tax revenues would help ease the state budget shortfall. We also support industrial hemp. The "War On Drugs" has failed. Addiction should be treated as a health problem, not a law enforcement problem. Other countries that ended their "wars on drugs" have had great successes.

Yesa) Do you support state government spending as a means of promoting economic growth?
Yesb) Do you support lowering state income taxes as a means of promoting economic growth?
Noc) Do you support reducing government regulations on the private sector?
Yesd) Do you support expanding access to unemployment benefits?
Noe) Do you support requiring welfare applicants to pass a drug test in order to receive benefits?
Yesf) Do you support an increase of the minimum wage of Kentucky?
Yesg) Do you support requiring employers to provide paid family leave?
h) Other or expanded principles:

Re question (b), I support lowering state income taxes on the poor and middle class while simultaneously raising taxes on the ultra-rich. The overall revenue to the state government would go up significantly. I'm a very progressive, Bernie Sanders Democrat.

Noa) Do you support adopting federal education standards in Kentucky?
Nob) Do you support state funding for charter schools?
Yesc) Should immigrants unlawfully present in the United States who graduate from Kentucky high schools be eligible for in-state tuition at public universities?
Yesd) Do you support increasing funding for higher education?
e) Other or expanded principles:

I oppose punishing teachers and local schools because their students happen to be low-income. I also oppose the standardized testing craze. I thought the Kentucky Education Reform Act (KERA) was very good, but the federal No Child Left Behind law was a step backward.

Yesa) Do you support state funding for the development of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, thermal)?
Yesb) Do you support government regulations of greenhouse gas emissions?
Yesc) Do you support increasing state funding for clean drinking water initiatives?
Nod) Do you support decreasing compensation for citizens who generate excess energy from personal solar panels ("net-metering")?
e) Other or expanded principles:

I worked in Kentucky's state energy office in Frankfort for 14 years, and I realized how much more other states were doing to promote energy efficiency in all sectors of the economy. I actually helped work on Kentucky's net metering bill and fought the utility companies for years in rate cases before the Public Service Commission to require them to expand their energy efficiency programs for electric and gas customers. The power of coal industry lobbyists has been holding back economic diversification in Kentucky's coalfields.

Noa) Do you generally support gun-control legislation?
Nob) Should background checks be required on gun sales between private citizens at gun shows?
Noc) Should teachers be allowed to bring guns into the classroom?
Nod) Should a license be required for gun ownership?
e) Other or expanded principles:

I support the Second Amendment. Organizations such as Moms Demand Action should form an alliance with the antiwar movement in order to develop a more consistent, effective message to the public. It is immoral to demand that guns be more tightly regulated in America while the US remains the biggest exporter of deadly weapons to dictatorships around the world. In 2018, when I ran for Congress, I said: "I support the Second Amendment for Americans, but Andy Barr supports giving guns to terrorist groups such as al-Qaeda in foreign countries." I pointed out his extreme hypocrisy.

Yesa) Should the state government increase funding for treatment facilities to combat opioid abuse?
Yesb) Do you support Medicaid expansion through Kentucky's health care programs?
Noc) Do you support requiring individuals to purchase health care insurance?
Yesd) Do you support legislation that grants citizens the right to choose to die through euthanasia?
Yese) Do you support eliminating religious exemptions for vaccinations?
Nof) Do you support a statewide smoking ban in workplaces that do not specialize in selling tobacco?
g) Other or expanded principles:

For many years, I have supported the Expanded and Improved Medicare for All Act that was originally introduced in the U.S. House by Representative John Conyers of Michigan before he retired. Health care is a human right, and a single-payer health insurance system would be much cheaper than the corrupt, profit-driven system we have now.

Yesa) Do you support the inclusion of sexual orientation in Kentucky's anti-discrimination laws?
Yesb) Do you support the inclusion of gender identity in Kentucky's anti-discrimination laws?
Yesc) Do you support greater efforts by Kentucky state government in closing the pay gap between men and women?
d) Other or expanded principles:
In the following area, please explain in a total of 100 words or less, any additional priorities of your campaign that have not been covered in these questions.

Defend and strengthen unions, which have been under heavy attack for the last 100 years. Promote co-ops and worker-owned businesses to enhance democracy in the workplace.
Reverse Matt Bevin's November, 2018 executive order that discriminates against individuals and companies that support the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions ("BDS") movement against Israel. Bevin's biased, immoral foreign policies could lead to another war in the Middle East. See our web site:
https://www.young4ky.com/bevin-s-foreign-policies-are-immora
Abolish the death penalty.
Prevent the National Guard from ever being sent to fight illegal, immoral wars of aggression in any foreign country.

In the following area, please explain in a total of 100 words or less, your top legislative priority and how you plan to fund it.

Comprehensive tax reform that would raise income taxes on the rich, the super-rich and multimillionaires, while reducing taxes on the poor and middle classes.
There's no problem funding that initiative because it would generate more revenue for the state government than the regressive tax system we have now.
