It's difficult to respond to budget questions without context.

We all want good paying jobs with benefits. However, raising the minimum wage will kill jobs, particularly for young unskilled workers who might benefit from some on the job training. For the inexperienced worker it's far better to have a low paying job than no job at all. The minimum wage is not designed to be a living wage, only a starting wage until more experience is gained.

Also, raising the minimum wage increases costs for those living on fixed incomes.

What is a "merit pay system" based upon? Student performance on arbitrary tests? Hardly a useful indicator.

Tenure guarantees a teacher certain "due process" rights if his or her contract isn't renewed. It doesn't "produce" anything.

Vouchers and charter schools are a reaction to the loss of local control and the lack of regard for the concerns of parents. We need to address the problem, not just treat the symptoms.

In the following area, please explain in a total of 100 words or less, your top two or three priorities if elected. If they require additional funding for implementation, please explain how you would obtain this funding.

Jobs: Working families and small business are the backbone of our economy. NH must encourage entrepreneurs, not crush them with bureaucratic regulation. NH's corporate taxes are the third highest in the country. The legislature must look at New Hampshire's business environment, including its worker compensation and state unemployment taxes as well as its health care and energy costs to make our state more competitive.

Education: Safeguard local control and ensure that this teacher-student relationship remains intact.

Transparent, open and accountable government: Public servants work for the people.
