John Thompson has provided voters with clear stances on key issues by responding to the 2018 Political Courage Test.

What is the Political Courage Test?

Washington State Legislative Election 2018 Political Courage Test

Pro-choicea) Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
Yesb) Should abortion be legal when the pregnancy resulted from incest or rape?
Noc) Do you support the prohibition of public funds for organizations that perform abortions?
d) Other or expanded principles:

Generally, I do not support the use of public money for an abortion, however, in those cases that if the fetus is dead or there is risk of the mother dying in a hospital, then, in order save the mother, public funds can be used. The use of public funds all depends on the medical conditions and the ability to pay.

Noa) Do you support the implementation of a state income tax in Washington?
Budget Stabilization:
Indicate which proposals you support (if any) for balancing Washington's budget.
Nob) Reducing state employee salaries AND/OR pensions?
Noc) Instituting mandatory furloughs AND/OR layoffs for state employees?
Nod) Reducing benefits for Medicaid recipients?
e) Other or expanded principles:

I believe that it is wrong to exempt Companies and Corporations from taxes, which puts more of the burden on its citizens. I can only support tax exemptions if the Companies in an agreement that they are growing their workforce, and failure to continued growth or layoffs or moving some of their workforce out of the state, would then terminate the agreement and the Company would be liable and the tax exemption would terminate.

Yesa) Do you support any limits on campaign contributions to state candidates?
Yesb) Do you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?
Yesc) Do you support the use of an independent AND/OR bipartisan commission for redistricting?
Nod) Do you support requiring a government-issued photo identification in order to vote at the polls?
e) Other or expanded principles:

I believe in our current Public Disclosure Commission limitations for campaign contributions and our current voting rights in the State of Washington. I do not believe that we need photo identification for voting.

Noa) Do you support capital punishment for certain crimes?
Yesb) Do you support the legalization of marijuana for recreational purposes?
Noc) Should a minor accused of a violent crime be prosecuted as an adult?
Nod) Do you support the enforcement of federal immigration laws by state and local police?
e) Other or expanded principles:

Enforcement of the federal immigration laws is the responsibility of the Federal government not the State or Local governments. Having our local law enforcement to do the federal government job takes away our local law enforcement from our citizens and the protection of our communities. Local governments are currently still under a budget crunch with many local governments short of law enforcement personal.

Yesa) Do you support state government spending as a means of promoting economic growth?
Nob) Do you support lowering state taxes as a means of promoting economic growth?
Noc) Do you support reducing state government regulations on the private sector?
Yesd) Do you support expanding access to unemployment benefits?
Noe) Do you support requiring welfare applicants to pass a drug test in order to receive benefits?
Yesf) Do you support an increase of the minimum wage of Washington?
g) Other or expanded principles:

Lowering taxes is not a means to promoting economic growth, but the spending of government does help economic growth. Government regulations usually come about as a result of bad companies who do not have the citizens best interest at heart and do not care if they pollute our environment. Drug testing for welfare applicants, is costing more to the public then the results have found and creates more cost then the welfare program it self costs the public. I would really want to cut corporate welfare dollars and save our citizens taxpaying dollars.

Noa) Do you support adopting federal education standards in Washington?
Nob) Do you support state funding for charter schools?
Noc) Should immigrants unlawfully present in the United States who graduate from Washington high schools be eligible for in-state tuition at public universities?
Yesd) Do you support increasing funding for the state education budget?
e) Other or expanded principles:

Federal education standards I believe are lower then the Washington state standards for education, so adopting the federal standards maybe lower then what we already have. I do believe that dreamers who have spent most of there lives here in the US should be allowed to get in-state tution at public universities as they probably will become very productive citizens of our state.

Yesa) Do you support state funding for the development of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, thermal)?
Yesb) Do you support state government regulations of greenhouse gas emissions?
Yesc) Do you support increasing state funding for clean drinking water initiatives?
d) Other or expanded principles:
Yesa) Do you generally support gun-control legislation?
Yesb) Should background checks be required on gun sales between private citizens at gun shows?
Noc) Should teachers be allowed to bring guns into the classroom?
Nod) Should a license be required for gun ownership?
e) Other or expanded principles:

As a gun owner I do believe that we must have common sense gun regulations with enhanced background checks. But I am not sure that I would go so far as to require a license in order to own a gun.

Yesa) Should the state government increase funding for treatment facilities to combat opioid abuse?
Yesb) Do you support Medicaid expansion through Washington's health care programs?
Yesc) Do you support requiring individuals to purchase health care insurance?
Yesd) Do you support legislation that grants citizens the right to choose to die through euthanasia?
Yese) Do you support eliminating religious exemptions for vaccinations?
f) Other or expanded principles:
Yesa) Do you support the inclusion of sexual orientation in Washington's anti-discrimination laws?
Yesb) Do you support the inclusion of gender identity in Washington's anti-discrimination laws?
Yesc) Do you support greater efforts by Washington state government in closing the pay gap between men and women?
d) Other or expanded principles:
In the following area, please explain in a total of 100 words or less, your top two or three priorities if elected. If they require additional funding for implementation, please explain how you would obtain this funding.

Even though we have a good educational system and we need to its continued funding, we are lacking support for students who are not going on to college, therefore, I would want to add Apprenticeship training to high schools for those students who do not want to go on to college. I believe that we need to help provided Health Care for every citizen in the State of Washington. Funding can come from closing the many Company tax exemptions to pay for both education and health care.
