Ken Cody has provided voters with clear stances on key issues by responding to the 2014 Political Courage Test.

What is the Political Courage Test?

New Jersey Congressional Election 2014 Political Courage Test

Pro-choiceCandidate AnswerDo you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
Other or expanded principles

I am pro-choice. I believe a woman has the right to her own body and has the right to choose. Abortion is never an easy decision but should never be used as a form of birth control. Another option that should be considered is adoption. Many couples who cannot have children because of various medical reasons would welcome an adopted child to their family.

YesCandidate AnswerIn order to balance the budget, do you support reducing defense spending?
YesCandidate AnswerIn order to balance the budget, do you support an income tax increase on any tax bracket?
Other or expanded principles

I am a strong supporter of our military but I do believe that we can make reductions in the defense budget. It cannot come at the expense of our troops. They need the right equipment and the latest in technology to achieve military success. However, we can cut several weapon initiatives and still have an impressive military. These cuts can provide more funding towards education and community programs.

I would support an income tax increase for the wealthy who earn over $200,000 a year. I do not want to see any increase for the lower and middle class.

YesCandidate AnswerDo you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?
Other or expanded principles

I believe we need to set strict regulations on all forms of contributions. Indirect campaign contributions or "soft money" needs to be limited and better accounted for. Candidates need to focus on the issues and spend less time fundraising. My candidacy accepts no monetary contributions and is self-funded. I feel any money raised should go to important causes like education, medical research, curing illness and helping the less fortunate.

YesDo you support capital punishment for certain crimes?
Other or expanded principles

Crime does not pay. If the act is severe, capital punishment needs to be enforced. By supporting this measure I believe that this can deter future crimes from ever occurring. This will also ensure any perpetrators from doing harm to society again.

YesCandidate AnswerDo you support federal spending as a means of promoting economic growth?
YesDo you support lowering taxes as a way of promoting growth in the economy?
YesDo you support providing tax incentives to businesses for the purpose of job creation?
Other or expanded principles

I will support legislation that will help our economy grow. Most importantly, we need to support local companies and make the "Made in the U.S.A." label thrive again. We have to focus building more small businesses and believe in them so they can become "Big Business". Buying American products is a start so we can reestablish a strong economy, keep our jobs here and help our unemployed find long lasting employment.

YesCandidate AnswerDo you support requiring states to implement education reforms in order to be eligible for competitive federal grants?
Other or expanded principles

Education reform is needed. Expanding research-based innovative programs will help schools hire the right teachers and principals. It will also help with student proficiency that will increase graduation rates. Federal grants can fund important educational programs across the country. Knowledge is power and education is the key for success.

YesCandidate AnswerDo you support building the Keystone XL pipeline?
NoDo you support reducing restrictions on offshore energy production?
Other or expanded principles

By building the Keystone XL pipeline we are creating new jobs and could receive an estimated 200 billion barrels of oil from Canada. Right now we import over 1.5 million barrels each day from the Middle East. It is much better from a safety and environmental perspective to transfer the oil in a pipeline versus shipping via rail or trucks.

Before reducing restrictions on offshore energy production it is important to make sure it can be environmentally safe. I will support legislation that promotes clean energy. Our country should invest in wind and solar energy for a cleaner environment.

YesDo you believe that human activity is contributing to climate change?
YesCandidate AnswerDo you support the federal regulation of greenhouse gas emissions?
Other or expanded principles

We need to raise awareness to the public on how we can make the earth a better place to live in. We can do our part. On a "small" scale if households across the United States replaced one regular light bulb with new fluorescent bulbs, the pollution reduction would be equivalent to removing one million cars from the road. I will support funding for environmental projects. If we do our share each day it can only help and make for better days ahead. Our children and future generations deserve this.

YesCandidate AnswerDo you support restrictions on the purchase and possession of guns?
Other or expanded principles

I believe that according to the second amendment of the Constitution you should have the right to bear arms. Many states have different rules and laws. There are several options that I believe that would improve gun control regulations if adopted nationwide. I support the following requirements: Universal background checks, state permits needed to purchase, owner license required, magazine capacity restrictions and open carry of a gun should be prohibited. Gun ownership should go to qualified individuals. These rules need to be enforced for the safety of our society, especially our children.

NoCandidate AnswerDo you support repealing the 2010 Affordable Care Act?
Other or expanded principles

While I do support the reforms set by the Affordable Care Act there are two concerns that need to be addressed. It is estimated by 2025 we will have a shortage of over fifty thousand primary care physicians due to growth in our nation?s aging population. This will leave many Americans without access to physicians. To help, medical schools need to increase enrollment while making it affordable to students. Another concern is The (ACA) does not offer any provision against price gouging. I support a nationwide limit on premiums which can be reviewed yearly so that we avoid enormous payments.

NoCandidate AnswerDo you support requiring illegal immigrants to return to their country of origin before they are eligible for citizenship?
Other or expanded principles

I would implement an "immigrant amnesty" allowing undocumented immigrants to come forward to federal, state and local authorities for one year. By coming forward we can go through proper procedures to determine if they qualify for citizenship. If not they will need to go back to their country of origin. After this point we need to tightly secure our borders and protect our nation from illegals from coming into America for security and economic reasons.

YesCandidate AnswerDo you support same-sex marriage?
Other or expanded principles

Marriage should be celebrated between two people. It should not discriminate.

YesCandidate AnswerDo you support targeting suspected terrorists outside of official theaters of conflict?
YesShould the U.S use military force in order to prevent governments hostile to the United States from possessing a nuclear weapon?
Other or expanded principles

In a global crisis we must strive for diplomacy but when that fails we need to take action for what is right. Military conflict should be used when there is no other option. I believe we should intervene when needed with caution. If the United States is in imminent danger we must defend ourselves.

NoCandidate AnswerDo you support allowing individuals to divert a portion of their Social Security taxes into personal retirement accounts?
Other or expanded principles

Diverting a portion of Social Security taxes into private accounts can cause significant reductions in traditional Social Security benefits. Based on estimates privatization would, over the next 40 years, reduce benefit levels by as much as 45% below 2005 levels. In my opinion we should not head down this route.

Please explain in a total of 100 words or less, your top two or three priorities if elected. If they require additional funding for implementation, please explain how you would obtain this funding.

My campaign believes in strict campaign finance reform. Stop the wasteful spending that goes on in Politics. An estimated 1 billion dollars will be raised by House candidates in 2014. My campaign does not accept any monetary contributions.

The economy - There are ways to make our economy strong. We can create jobs and keep them in America by investing in clean energy. Pass legislation in Congress that gives incentives to small businesses. Do our share in buying American products.

Strive for a Bipartisan Congress - All parties need to work together for the betterment of our country.
