Reason for Seeking Public Office:
There are many reasons, but mostly it reduces down to three.
First I'm extremely disappointed in the direction and conduct of the legislature in Olympia. There is still, even in the midst of this ongoing budgetary battle, too much reliance on tired, stale ideas and accounting tricks when clearly a fresh approach is needed. There is still a strong tendency to play the partisan blame game. It's time to stop all that. But that can't be done by electing the same people, proposing the same failed solutions, over and over and over. Cooperation, respect, open-minded deliberations are what's needed to build a prosperous future for all of us.
Secondly, I'm concerned, as are many Washingtonians, about the oceans of special interest money having an undo influence on the legislative process. The benefits of a democracy should well up not trickle down. Decisions and priorities should be decided by doing what's right for the people of Washington, not advancing the agenda of any special interest. Although it's more prevalent on a national level, this type of influence reaches government on all levels. To change the current system, we have to elect leaders who will fight to change it, who demonstrate by their actions a willingness to act on behalf of the people, not special interests. To that end, and to demonstrate my commitment, I refuse to solicit or accept any money that doesn't come from individuals.
Third, this is an open seat. It's not owned by the Democrats, or Republicans or the Association of Washington Businesses or the Washington State Central Labor Council. It's our seat. The people of the 39th district's seat. As such it provides fertile ground for what elections should be about --Vision, values and ideas.
