Some reasons why Theodore Roosevelt is the politician I most admire:
He supported strict limits and disclosure requirements on political campaign contributions.
He opposed the domination of politics by business interests whom he believed controlled both established parties. His platform in 1912 asserted that, "To destroy this invisible government, to dissolve the unholy alliance between corrupt business and corrupt politics is the first task."
He urged states to adopt measures for direct democracy including: (1) Recall elections allowing citizens to remove elected officials before the end of his or her term, (2) Public Initiatives allowing citizens to propose laws and enact them by popular vote; (3) and Judicial Recall allowing citizens to override by popular vote a court ruling declaring a law unconstitutional.
He supported conservation and the responsible use of our natural resources. In fact, his most lasting and significant contribution was the preservation of the most unique natural resources in the United States through the National Park System.
He supported a national health service to include all existing government medical agencies.
