Title: Requiring Completion of Reinforced Border Fencing

Vote Smart's Synopsis:

Vote to adopt an amendment to S Amdt 1373 to HR 2892 that requires the 700 miles of reinforced fencing along the Mexico border, authorized under existing law, be completed by no later than December 31, 2010.

Highlights:

  • Deems vehicle barriers, motion sensitive cameras and other forms of "virtual fencing" ineffective, and therefore do not meet the requirement of being a pedestrian barricade (Sec. 560).
  • Requires the Secretary of Homeland Security to report the department's plans and progress toward timely completion of the fence to Congress, by no later than September 30, 2009 (Sec. 560).
