Vote to pass a bill that would raise the loan forgiveness amounts from $5,000 to $17,500 for elementary and secondary math, science, reading, and special education teachers in low-income schools.
- Teachers of other subjects would still receive the $5,000 loan forgiveness, assuming they continued to meet all the standards.
- Teachers must be highly qualified and agree to teach for five consecutive years at a school with more than 40 percent of the students coming from families below the poverty line.
