Title: Prohibits Cities or Counties from Closing More than Half of Their Polling Places 30 Days Before an Election

Vote to pass a bill that prohibits cities or counties from closing more than half of their polling places 30 days or less before an election in the state of Wisconsin.

Highlights:

  • Prohibits any municipality in the state from closing more than one-half of its polling places within 30 days before an election (Sec. 1-3).

  • Prohibits a municipality from closing any polling place within 30 days before an election without both the head of the governing body of the municipality and the municipal clerk approving the closures and without the municipal clerk doing all of the following (Sec. 1-3):

    • Posting public notice of the closures on the municipality's website or, if the municipality does not maintain a website, posting notices in at least 3 different locations within the municipality reasonably calculated to notify the most residents;

    • Publishing 3 notices in a newspaper likely to give notice in the area notifying the public of the closures; or

    • Publishing 2 notices or one notice in a newspaper likely to give notice in the area if time does not permit the publication of 3 notices.

  • Specifies that only after an election and with public support and approval and at least 30 days before the next election may a municipality approve the discontinuation of a polling place location (Sec. 4).

  • Specifies that the provisions of this bill shall take effect upon passage and approval by the governor (Sec. 4).
