Title: Requires Schools Maintain Certain Emergency Medication Kits and Utilize Them in Emergencies
Vote to pass a bill that requires schools maintain certain emergency medication kits and to administer such medication in emergency situations in the state of Kansas.
Requires schools maintain certain emergency medication kits including a stock supply of standard-dose and pediatric-dose epinephrine auto-injectors and to administer such medication in emergency situations in the state of Kansas (Sec. 1).
Authorizes a pharmacist to distribute a stock supple of albuterol metered-dose inhalers, albuterol solution and spacers from a physician or mid-level practitioner in the name of the school (Sec. 1).
Specifies schools shall not be liable for civil damages resulting from adminstration of said medication (Sec. 1).
Defines "Albuterol" as a short-acting beta-2 agonist-inhaled medication, otherwise known as a bronchodilator, that is prescribed by a physician or mid-level practitioner for the treatment of respiratory distress (Sec. 3).
Defines "Albuterol metered-dose inhaler" as a portable drug delivery system containing a canister of multiple premeasured doses of albuterol in a device actuator (Sec. 3).
Defines "Albuterol solution" as a liquid form of albuterol for use with a nebulizer.
Defines “Anaphaylaxis" or "anaphylactic reaction" as a sudden, severe and potentially life-threatening multi-system allergic reaction (Sec. 3).
Defines "Designated school personnel" as an employee, officer, agent, or volunteer of a school who has completed training, documented by the school nurse, a physician or a mid-level practitioner, to administer emergency medication on a voluntary basis outside of the scope of employment (Sec. 3).
Defines "Emergency medication" for the purposes of this bill as epinephrine or albuterol (Sec. 3).
Defines "Epinephrine" means a medication prescribed by a physician or mid-level practitioner for the emergency treatment of anaphylaxis prior to the arrival of emergency medical system responders (Sec. 3).
Defines "Epinephrine auto-injector" as a device that automatically injects a premeasured dose of epinephrine (Sec. 3).
Defines "Nebulizer" as a device that is used to change a liquid medication to a fine spray of liquid or mist for the administration of the medication through inhalation (Sec. 3).
Specifies that the provisions of this bill shall take effect and be in force after its passage and publication in the state statute book (Sec. 5).
