Title: Requires School and Parent Intervention if Students Miss 5 Consecutive Unexcused Days
Vote to adopt a conference report vote and pass a bill that requires schools to intervene early and hold parent meetings if elementary school students miss 5 days without an excuse.
Defines truancy prevention measure (Sec. 1).
Specifies that it is the duty of school personnel to report to a prosecuting attorney that a child is a habitual truant (Sec. 2).
Requires that a prosecuting attorney inform each parent of a truant child regarding an affidavit (Sec. 2).
Specifies that attendance officers have the power to enforce truancy measures (Sec. 2).
Requires attendance officers to meet at least 1 time per year with the department of child services to discuss truancy measures and their effectiveness either in person or virtually (Sec. 2).
Defines “Absent Student” (Sec. 6).
Specifies regulations regarding truancy policy with the following requirements (Sec. 6):
Written notification to the parents;
Required attendance of the parent at a attendance conference;
That the school will implement truancy policies regarding the student;and
That the juvenile court is notified if it needs to take hold of the student.
