Title: Requires Parental Approval for Minor Social Media Access

Vote to pass a bill that requires parental approval for minor social media access in the state of Iowa.

Highlights:

  • Prohibits a social media company from permitting a minor to be an account holder, unless the social media company has received prior express parental authorization (Sec.3). 

  • Requires social media companies to allow a parent to revoke or rescind the grant of parental authorization at any time (Sec. 3). 

  • Prohibits a social media company from collecting, transferring, transmitting or retaining any data from a minor who has not received parental authorization (Sec. 3). 

  • Requires a social media company to provide a granted parental authorization with a password for access to the minors account (Sec. 3) 

  • Establishes that any person with reason to believe that a social media company is in violation of this act may bring a civil action in the district court in which the person resides (Sec. 4). 

  • Authorizes the damages in an amount equal to the greater of either ten thousand dollars for each violation (Sec. 4). 

  • Establishes that this act applies to social media companies operating on or following the effective date (Sec. 7).
