Title: Expands Eligibility for Low-Income Student Scholarships
Vote to pass a bill that expands eligibility for low-income student scholarships.
Defines “eligible student” as a child who resides in the state and (Sec. 1):
Not graduated from high school;
Not reached the age or 21;
Has an annual family income of less than or equal to 400 percent of the federal poverty guidelines;
Is enrolling in grades one through 12 in the state for the first time;
Has been adopted, placed in fonster care, or placed in kinship care placement at any time prior to graduation from high school or the reaching the age of 21;
Has a parent on active duty with any branch of the armed forces or was killed in the line of duty; or
Has a parent who is an emergency medical service provider, firefighter, or law enforcement officer.
Authorizes the state board of education to provide written notice no later than 30 days after granting organizations scholarship approval for eligible students (Sec. 1).
Appropriates $20 million from the state general budget for fiscal year 2023 for student scholarships for the aforementioned eligible students (Sec. 3).
Establishes that this bill shall take effect upon publication in the statute book (Sec. 5).
