Title: Expands Student Privacy Rights

Vote to pass a bill that expands student privacy bill of rights.

Highlights:

 

  • Specifies that technology providers do not own data on K-12 students obtained through contracts with educational institutions (educational data) (Sec. 2).

  • Requires technology providers to destroy educational data within 90 days of the end of a contract with an educational institution (Sec. 2).

  • Prohibits technology providers from using educational data for any commercial purpose (Sec. 2).

  • Requires K-12 schools to provide parents and students with information regarding (Sec. 2):

    • Which technology providers will have access to their data;

    • How parents and students may contact the educational institution; and

    • How parents and students may access copies of contracts with any technology providers.

  • Prohibits technology providers from tracking location, using audio or visual receiving features, or tracking Internet activity on K-12 school-issued devices, except when such actions are necessary to comply with state law (Sec. 3).

  • Requires technology providers to notify parents and students within 72 hours if they have accessed school-provided devices for any reason (Sec. 3).
