Vote to pass a bill that prohibits the use of toxic chemicals in food packaging.

Highlights:

 

  • Defines “perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances” or “PFAS” as a class of fluorinated organic chemicals containing at least one fully fluorinated carbon atom (Sec. 1-2.e).

  • Prohibits a PFAS manufacturer from intentionally adding to a product that has a functional or technical effect in the product, the PFAS components of intentionally added chemicals and PFAS that are intentional breakdown products of an added chemical that also have a functional or technical effect in the product (Sec. 1-1).

  • Specifies a “juvenile product” does not include any of the following (Sec. 1-2):

    • A children’s electronic product, including, but not limited to, a personal computer, audio and video equipment, calculator, wireless phone, game console, handheld device incorporating a video screen, or any associated peripheral such as a mouse, keyboard, power supply unit, or power cord;

    • A medical device;

    • An internal component of a juvenile product that would not come into direct contact with a child’s skin or mouth during reasonably foreseeable use and abuse of the product; and

    • An adult mattress.

  • Prohibits a person from selling or distributing in commerce in this state any new, not previously owned, juvenile product that contains prohibited PFAS chemicals (Sec. 1-2.e).

  • Requires a manufacturer to use the least toxic alternative when replacing PFAS chemicals in a juvenile product (Sec. 1-2.e).
