Vote to pass a bill that allows automatic voter registration at the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Highlights:

 

  • Specifies that any individual that goes to a DMV for a motor vehicle license will be automatically registered to vote, except if at the time of registration they provide a document that demonstrates non-citizenship (Sec. 1). 

  • Authorizes the State Election Commissioner to implement automatic voter registration at other state agencies that already offer voter registration services under existing laws (Sec. 1). 

  • Requires the DMV to provide to the Department of Elections all of the following information regarding an individual that has citizenship to register them to vote (Sec. 2): 

    • The individual’s name;

    • The individual’s date of birth;

    • The individual’s driver’s license or state ID number;

    • The individual’s residence address and mailing address, if different from the residence address;

    • The individual’s county of residence;

    • The individual’s citizenship status;

    • An electronic image of the individual’s signature.

  • Requires the Department of Elections to notify registrants of their registration via mail, to allow them to decline their registration or affiliate with a political party (Sec. 2). 

  • Specifies that individuals that do not affiliate with a political party during the automatic registration process will be allowed to do so at the polls (Sec. 2).
