Highlights:

 

  • Establishes that the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation will coordinate with the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the Department of Justice to obtain federal funding by January 1, 2022, to address the issue of missing & murdered indigenous people in Oklahoma (Sec. 2). 

  • Establishes the Office of Liaison for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons upon federal funding (Sec. 2). 

  • Establishes that the aforementioned office will (Sec. 2):

    • Work with state, tribal and federal law enforcement on missing persons & homicide cases involving indigenous persons;

    • Develop the best protocols for law enforcement in response to missing reports of indigenous persons;

    • Assist families, tribal agencies and nongovernmental groups in using the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System;

    • Provide guidance to victims’ families with navigating state & federal court cases;

    • Coordinate with the Chief Medical Examiner’s office and tribal liaisons to develop training on missing & murdered indigenous people issues;

    • Create training for law enforcement & the public on the issue of missing & murdered indigenous persons; and

    • Consult indigenous groups to promote community relations.

  • Establishes that this bill will become effective on November 1, 2020 (Sec. 3).
