Vote to pass a bill that would authorize a $350 bonus to North Carolina public school teachers teaching in the fall of 2020, plus another $600 at the discretion of the governor.

Highlights:

 

  • Establishes that teachers with no experience in the 2020-2021 school year will receive a salary of $3,500 per month, and increases by $100 with each additional year of experience (Sec. 1). 

  • Establishes that a $350 lump sum bonus will be given to every teacher that is employed as a teacher as of October 1, 2020 (Sec. 2). 

  • Authorizes the Governor to allocate funds from the Governor’s Emergency Education Relief Fund to provide an additional lump sum bonus of $600 to each teacher, instructional support personnel, or non-certified personnel (Sec. 3). 

  • Establishes an annual salary schedule for principals, whose placement shall be based on the following (Sec. 4):

    • The principal will be paid the Exceeded Growth column if the school’s growth scores show it exceeded growth in at least 2 of the prior 3 school years;

    • The principal will be paid the Met Growth column if either the school’s growth scores show it met expected growth for at least one of the prior 3 school years, or the principal supervised the school in at least 2 of the prior 3 school years that was not eligible to receive a school growth score; and

    • The principal will be paid the Base column if the school growth scores show it did not meet expected growth in at least 2 of the prior 3 years, or if the principal did not supervise the school for the majority of the last 2 of 3 prior school years.

  • Establishes that assistant principals will follow the same salary schedule as teachers, plus a 19 percent bonus (Sec. 6). 

  • Establishes that this bill becomes effective July 1, 2020, upon passage (Sec. 10).
