Vote to pass a bill that authorizes college student athletes to receive compensation for the use of their name, image, or likeness, effective January 1, 2023.

Highlights:

• Prohibits an institution or athletic association from upholding any measure that prevents a student athlete from earning compensation for the use of the student athlete’s name, image or likeness (Sec. 10).

• Prohibits an athletic association from preventing the participation of an institution on the basis of student athlete compensation (Sec. 10).

• Prohibits an institution, athletic association, or like organization and group from compensating prospective students (Sec. 15).

• Prohibits an institution, athletic association, or like organization and group from preventing a student athlete from obtaining professional representation regarding a contract or legal matters (Sec. 20).

• Requires anyone providing professional representation to a student athlete to be licensed pursuant to the Illinois Athlete Agents Act (Sec. 20).

• Prohibits institutions from revoking a scholarship as a result of earning compensation or obtaining legal representation (Sec. 25).

• Requires a student athlete who has entered into a contract for giving compensation to the athlete for use of their name, image, or likeness, to disclose the contract to an official of the institution (Sec. 30).

• Prohibits a team contract of an institution’s athletic program from preventing a student athlete from using the athlete’s name, image, or likeness for a commercial purpose when the athlete is not engaged in official team activities (Sec. 30).
