Title: Classifies Domestic Violence as a Distinct Crime

Vote to pass a conference committee report that classifies domestic violence as a distinct crime category.

Highlights:

 

  • Specifies that an individual will be guilty of a misdemeanor offense if they willfully cause any of the following, including (Sec. 3):

    • Bodily injury to the individual’s family or household member;

    • Substantial bodily injury to the individual’s family or household member; or

    • Serious bodily injury to the individuals family or household member.

  • Specifies that an individual will be guilty of a class B misdemeanor for the first offense of the above mentioned conduct and a class A misdemeanor for second and all subsequent offenses involving the commission of domestic violence (Sec. 3).

  • Specifies that an individual charged with an offense under this act shall be prosecuted in a district court (Sec. 3).
