Vote to adopt a conference report that amends state voting rolls in correlation to jury absences.

Highlights:

• Requires all applications for excuses from jury duty to be made on the form developed and furnished by the Administrative Office of the Courts (Sec. 2).

• Requires the clerk of superior court, if a person is disqualified from jury duty because of their citizenship status, to report the name and address of the individual electronically to the State Board of Elections on a quarterly basis (Sec. 4).

• Requires the State Board of Elections to retain this information for 4 years and use it to conduct efforts to remove names from lists of registered voters (Sec. 4).

• Requires the State Board of Elections to distribute a report of these disqualified individuals who are registered to vote in that county to each county board of elections (Sec. 5)

• Requires the county board to give 30 days written notice to the voter at their registration address or mailing address, and to remove the individual’s name from its registration records if the voter makes no objection (Sec. 4).

• Establishes that nothing in this act shall be construed to restrict the authority of a local board of elections or State Board of Elections to determine an individual’s eligibility to vote (Sec. 4).

Vote Smart's Synopsis:

Vote to pass a bill that amends state voting rolls in correlation to jury absences.

Highlights:

• Authorizes a superior court to keep in their private records an individual’s name and address who requests to be excused from jury duty on the basis that they are not qualified to serve due to non citizenship status, and to report the information to the State Board of Elections quarterly (Sec. 3).

• Specifies that the State Board of Elections shall retain this information for 4 years and use it to conduct efforts to remove names from lists of registered voters (Sec. 3).

• Establishes that nothing in this act shall be construed to restrict the authority of a local board of elections or State Board of Elections to determine an individual’s eligibility to vote (Sec. 3).

• Specifies that records retained by a county board of elections or State Board of Elections shall be public records and may be destroyed after the 4 year period is over and are no longer public records (Sec. 3).
