Vote Smart's Synopsis:

Vote to pass a bill that requires biannual reports from nuclear power plants while going through decommissioning.

Highlights:

• Requires the owner or operator of each nuclear power plant within the state to provide the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) with a copy of their decommissioning status report and submit it to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Federal Energy Regulation Commission (Sec. 5).

• Requires the ICC to provide the General Assembly with a copy of their decommissioning status report for shutdown units, as submitted by the owner or operator of a nuclear power plant within the state to the previous commissions, every two years beginning June 1, 2020 (Sec. 5). 

• Defines “decommissioning” as the series of activities that occur when a nuclear power plant is retired to ensure the shutdown is in compliance with federal and state law and that the plant creates no concern for public safety or health (Sec. 5).
