Title: Prohibits the Sale and Manufacturing of Fur Products

Vote to pass with amendment a bill that prohibits the sale or manufacturing of fur products.

Highlights:

  • Prohibits the manufacturing, sale, trade, and distribution of fur and fur products, with the following exceptions (Sec. 1):

    • Used fur products;

    • Fur or fur products used for religious purposes; or

    • Fur or fur products used for traditional tribal, cultural, or spiritual purposes by Native American tribes.

  • Specifies that “fur product” does not include the following (Sec. 1):

    • Cowhide;

    • Leathers;

    • Deerskin, sheepskin, or goatskin; or

    • Pelts or animal skin for the purposes of taxidermy.

  • Requires vendors and traders of used fur products to maintain a record of used fur sales for at least one year (Sec. 1).

  • Establishes the following penalties for violations of this bill (Sec.1):

    • A $500 civil penalty for the first violation;

    • A $750 civil penalty for the second violation within one year of a previous transgression; and

    • A $1,000 civil penalty for a violation that occurs within one year of a second violation. 

  • Specifies that the monies from all of these civil penalties will be deposited into the Fish and Game Preservation Fund and used for the enforcement of this bill (Sec. 1).

  • Specifies that this act shall take effect on January 1, 2023 (Sec. 3.5).
