Title: Requires Accuracy of Maine's Meat and Poultry Labeling

Vote Smart's Synopsis:

Vote to pass a bill that requires complete accuracy in Maine's meat and poultry labeling.

Highlights:

  • Classifies labeling or advertising poultry, poultry products, meat, or meat products that are offered for sale, sold, or distributed within Maine as “Maine-raised” or by a similar designation, as mislabeling poultry and meat if the poultry or animal was not raised in Maine (Sec. 1).

  • Specifies that “raised in Maine” means that (Sec. 1):

    • For poultry and poultry products, the poultry was raised in Maine from no later than the 7th day after hatching and processed solely in Maine; and

    • For meat and meat products, that the animal was born, raised and processed in Maine.

  • Authorizes the commissioner to waive any determinations made that poultry, a poultry product, meat or a meat product, is misbranded if the commissioner finds a waiver warranted due to economic factors (Sec. 1).
