Vote to pass a bill that authorizes compensation for college athletes.

Highlights:

  • Prohibits postsecondary educational institutions, athletic associations, conferences, or other groups with similar authority regarding intercollegiate athletics, from (Sec. 2):

    • Obstructing an intercollegiate student athlete in receiving financial compensation for anything using the athlete’s name, image, or likeness;

    • Obstructing intercollegiate athletes in getting professional representation; and

    • Giving financial compensation associated with name, image, or likeness to prospective student athletes.

  • Prohibits the financial compensation a student obtains from their name, image, or likeness to alter the student’s scholarship eligibility (Sec. 2).

  • Prohibits athletic associations, conferences, or other groups with similar authority regarding intercollegiate athletics, from blocking the participation of a postsecondary educational institution in intercollegiate athletics because of a student athlete’s financial compensation received from their name, image, or likeness (Sec. 2).

  • Requires the professional representation of intercollegiate athletes to be licensed by the State and comply with the federal Sports Agent Responsibility and Trust Act (Sec. 2).

  • Specifies that this bill goes into effect January 1, 2023 (Sec. 2).
