Vote to pass a bill that authorizes inmate housing according to gender identity rather that biological sex.

Highlights:

• Defines “gender pronoun” as a third-person singular pronoun, such as “he,” “she,” or “they” (Sec. 2).

• Defines “honorific” as a form of respectful address typically combined with an individual’s surname, such as “Mr.,” “Ms.,” or “Mx.” (Sec. 2).

• Requires the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation to ask each individual admitted to the department about their (Sec. 2):

• Gender identity and sex assigned at birth; and

• Preferred first name, gender pronoun, and honorific. 

• Requires the identification issued to incarcerated individuals to have a gender marker appropriate to the gender identity stated by the individual (Sec. 2).

• Requires staff and contractors of the department to use the gender pronouns and honorifics specified by incarcerated individuals (Sec. 2). 

• Requires incarcerated individuals to be placed in correctional facilities in accordance with their gender identity, unless an individual’s health and safety needs necessitate a differing placement, in which case the individual’s housing will be reassessed (Sec. 3).
