Title: Amends Requirements for Missing Persons Reports

Vote to pass a bill that amends requirements for missing persons reports by law enforcement officers.

Highlights:

  • Requires all law enforcement authorities to accept, without delay, any report of a missing person unless there are extenuating circumstances, including the following (Sec. 1):

    • The law enforcement authority knows the location of the person reported missing;

    • The law enforcement authority confirms the safe status of the person reporting missing;

    • The law enforcement authority confirms that another law enforcement authority has or will accept a missing person report for the person; or

    • Other circumstances documented by the law enforcement authority.

  • Requires all missing persons reports to be entered into the database of the National Crime Information Center within the the US Department of Justice within 2 hours of receipt for persons under 21, or 8 hours of receipt for persons 21 years or older (Sec. 1).

  • Requires all law enforcement authorities to submit information regarding a missing child to the missing children information program (Sec. 2).

  • Requires the Secretary of State to send a copy of this Act to the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Assistant Secretary of Indian Affairs at the US Department of the Interior (Sec. 3).
