Title: Amends Gubernatorial Qualifications

A vote to pass a bill that amends the requirements for gubernatorial candidacy.

Highlights:

 

  • Requires every candidate for the office of secretary of state, attorney general, state treasurer, or state commissioner of insurance to be a qualified elector of Kansas by the deadline for filing (Sec. 1).

  • Requires every candidate for governor and lieutenant governor to be a qualified elector and at least 25 years of age by the deadline for filing (Sec. 1).

  • Requires every candidate for the office of attorney general to be licensed to practice law within the state of Kansas (Sec. 1).

  • Authorizes easier access to voting materials for voters who have a disability preventing them from signing the applications or voting forms (Sec. 3). 

  • Authorizes the secretary of state authority to prescribe the general format of advance voting ballot envelopes (Sec. 5).

  • Authorizes the county election officer to move the canvass to any business day not later than 13 days following the election, as long as notice of the move is published in a newspaper prior to the canvass (Sec. 8).

  • Prohibits the board of county commissioners from purchasing, leasing, or renting any direct recording electronic systems (Sec. 9).

  • Prohibits the board of county commissioners from purchasing, leasing, or renting any electronic voting systems unless the system has the ability to be tested before an election and prior to the date of the canvass (Sec. 9).
