Vote to concur with house amendments and pass a bill that amends certain teaching education requirements to alleviate teacher shortages within the state.

  • Specifies that the superintendent of public instruction will establish an alternative teaching program that allows an individual to earn an interim teaching certificate that qualifies them to teach in public schools in the state of Michigan (Sec. 1531).

  • Requires an individual applying for an interim teaching certificate meet all of the following conditions, including, but not limited to (Sec. 1531):

    • Is a participant in an alternative teaching program approved by the superintendent;

    • Holds a bachelor’s, master’s, doctorate, or professional degree from a regionally accredited college or university; and

    • Has passed the appropriate available subject area examination for each subject they have applied to be certified.

  • Defines an “alternative teaching program” as a program that provides intensive training to participants over the following subject areas, including, but not limited to (Sec. 1531):

    • Child development or child psychology;

    • Family and community relationships;

    • Diverse learners or instructional strategies; or

    • A form of field-based experience in a classroom setting.
