Vote to pass a bill that requires an individual to work 29 hours a week to qualify for medical assistance.



  • Amends the Social Welfare Act to add work requirements to the Medical Assistance Program (Sec. 1).  

  • Requires the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), by October 1, 2018, to apply for a Federal waiver and submit subsequent waivers to prohibit and prevent a lapse in the work requirements as a condition of receiving medical assistance (Sec. 1).  

  • Requires the DHHS to include in its implementation of the waiver a requirement of 29 hours average a week per month of qualifying activities (Sec. 1).  

  • Requires able-bodied recipients to verify compliance on a monthly basis, verify family income quarterly, and report a change in family income within 10 days (Sec. 1).  

  • Prohibits a recipient from receiving medical assistance for 1 year if they do not comply within 30 days of receiving their first warning (Sec. 1).  

  • Exempts an individual who is pregnant, receiving disability or unemployment benefits, a full-time student, or has a medical condition limiting their ability to work (Sec. 1).  

  • Exempts caretakers of an individual under the age of 6 or of an individual who has a disability and needs full-time care (Sec. 1).  

  • Exempts an individual who has been incarcerated within the last 6 months or is under the age of 21 and has previously been in foster care (Sec. 1).  

  • Requires the DHHS to implement these requirements by October 1, 2019, and to give 90 days' advance notice to recipients (Sec. 1).  

  • Specifies that meeting the workforce engagement requirements would count toward meeting the work requirements of other public assistance programs (Sec. 1).
