Title: Amends State Election Recount Procedures

Vote Smart's Synopsis:

Vote to pass a bill that prohibits candidates who are not within close striking distance of the initial winner from requesting a recount.

Highlights:

  • Defines candidates who qualify as an aggrieved party who may request a recount as any of the following (Sec. 3):

    • For an election at which 4,000 or fewer votes are cast for the office that the candidate seeks, a candidate who trails the leading candidate by no more that 40 votes; or

    • For an election at which more than 4,000 votes are cast for the office that the candidate seeks, a candidate who trails the leading candidate by no more than 1% of the total votes cast for that office.

  • Requires a recount petitioner to reimburse the Wisconsin Elections Commision for recount costs, and gives local clerks more time to tabulate costs (Secs. 4-5).

  • Requires a recount petitioner to make a recount petition earlier in the process (Sec. 1).
