A vote to pass a bill that classifies the targeting of police officers, firefighters, or emergency medical technicians as a hate crime and increases the potential penalties, effective July 1, 2017.

Highlights:
  • Specifies that penalties are subject to enhancement if a crime is committed because of the victim’s actual or perceived employment as a law enforcement officer, firefighter, or emergency medical technician (Sec. 2).

  • Specifies that if the crime was committed because of the victim’s actual or perceived employment as a law enforcement officer, firefighter, or emergency medical technician then the penalty may be increased by up to twice the amount authorized by law for the offense (Sec. 3).
