Title: Amends Religious Exemption Requirements for Universities

Vote to pass a bill that amends the requirements for a university to claim a religious exemption from Title IX and the Equity in Higher Education Act.

Highlights:

  • Limits the religious exemption from the Equity in Higher Education Act to postsecondary schools that are controlled by a religious organization (Sec. 1).
  • Requires a postsecondary school receiving a religious exemption from Title IX or the Equity in Higher Education Act to disclose the basis for claiming the exemption to current and prospective students, faculty members, and employees (Sec. 2). 
  • Requires a postsecondary school to disclose the basis for claiming the exemption by various means including, but not limited to, the following means (Sec. 2):
    • In a prominent location of the campus where notices are posted;
    • In materials sent to prospective students seeking admission to the university; and
    • In orientation programs for new students. 
  • Specifies that a postsecondary school that has participated in the Cal Grant program will not lose eligibility to participate in the program if it does not comply with the provisions of this bill (Sec. 4).
